IIM Shillong: What Students Should Know Before Applying
Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong) is an Institute of National Importance offering a two-year full-time residential PGP leading to an MBA degree. The institute also runs a five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM), a 12-month PGP for Executives and a two-year MBA for Working Executives.
The flagship PGP is designed for fresh graduates and young professionals. It combines core management courses, electives, a two-month summer internship after the first year, capstone learning and opportunities for international exchange. The PGP is fully residential and students must stay in institute hostels.
For a student comparing established IIMs, IIM Shillong stands out for its residential learning environment, strong consulting and finance presence, high recent median salary and a distinctive campus in Meghalaya. The right decision still depends on your CAT profile, total cost, preferred career function and the opportunity cost of the two-year MBA.

Official PGPEx information ↗If you are completing graduation or have limited work experience, the two-year PGP is the main route. If you are coming directly after Class 12, IPM is the relevant integrated route. Experienced professionals should compare PGPEx and PGP Working Executives separately rather than treating them as the same MBA.
IIM Shillong MBA Admission 2026-28: CAT Cutoff & Selection
IIM Shillong's PGP 2026-28 domestic admission process uses CAT 2025 for preliminary screening and a subsequent Personal Interaction process. The institute's published minimum sectional percentiles for PI consideration are 75 in VARC, DILR and QA for the General/EWS/other unreserved group, 60 each for SC and 50 each for ST and DA. These are minimum screening thresholds, not the percentile that guarantees an interview or admission.
| Category | VARC | DILR | QA | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DA | 50 | 50 | 50 | Minimum published sectional threshold |
| ST | 50 | 50 | 50 | Minimum published sectional threshold |
| SC | 60 | 60 | 60 | Minimum published sectional threshold |
| EWS | 75 | 75 | 75 | Minimum published sectional threshold |
| Others | 75 | 75 | 75 | Minimum published sectional threshold |
How shortlisting works
IIM Shillong first applies the minimum CAT sectional requirements. Eligible candidates are then evaluated through a composite score using CAT percentile and a normalized application rating score (NARS). NARS considers Class X, Class XII, graduation and work-experience components. Therefore, the published CAT threshold should not be read as an expected-call percentile.
Admission timeline for PGP 2026-28
| Stage | Indicative timeline |
|---|---|
| PI shortlisting | Mid-January |
| Personal Interaction | Early February to late April |
| Final offer / waitlist | By early May |
| Campus registration | Mid to late June |
IIM Shillong's shortlist is independent of other IIMs. A candidate who clears the published minimums can still miss the PI shortlist because the institute uses composite scoring and profile information.
IIM Shillong MBA Fees, Hostel Cost & Scholarships
The institute's currently published PGP finance page shows a 2024-26 total of ₹26.18 lakh, including acceptance/caution/advance mess charges and six term payments. A separate 2026-28 PGP fee notice was not available on the institute's public finance page at the time of this guide, so students should not treat ₹26.18 lakh as the confirmed 2026-28 fee. For budgeting, it is the latest detailed official fee schedule publicly visible on the institute site.

The institute states that PGP participants have been eligible for collateral-free education loans from banks, subject to bank procedures.
Financial support
- Need Based Financial Assistance scheme.
- Government scholarships for eligible categories.
- Education-loan access through banks.
Budget beyond headline fee
- Mess and personal expenses should be planned separately where applicable.
- Optional international exchange can add travel and related costs.

IIM Shillong MBA Curriculum, Campus & Student Life
The PGP runs across six terms over two years. The curriculum includes core courses in areas such as financial reporting, managerial economics, marketing, statistics, operations, finance, human capital, strategy, business law and information systems, followed by electives and integrative learning. A two-month summer internship is conducted after the first year.
What the academic experience looks like
| Stage | What students typically experience |
|---|---|
| Terms I-III | Management fundamentals, functional subjects, quantitative decision-making and behavioural learning. |
| Summer | Two-month internship after the first year. |
| Terms IV-VI | Advanced/elective courses, independent study, capstone and broader management perspective. |
| International exposure | Study Abroad and Student Exchange opportunities; optional and subject to programme arrangements. |
Hostel and campus
The PGP is fully residential. IIM Shillong's handbook states that first-year accommodation may be allotted at Umsawli or Nongthymmai; the locations are about 12 km apart and institute buses connect participants to the main campus for classes and activities. The institute aims to provide single accommodation, although double sharing can be used when required.
The Shillong location is part of the experience: the campus setting, residential cohort and relatively contained environment can be attractive if you value community and campus life. It can be less convenient for students who strongly prefer a large metro-city ecosystem.
IIM Shillong Placements: Latest 2024-26 Outcomes
The latest completed final placement report is for the PGP 2024-26 batch. It reports 393 graduating students, 147 recruiters including 51 new recruiters, 102 PPO/PPI offers, a highest CTC of ₹71.50 LPA, average CTC of ₹27.03 LPA and median CTC of ₹26.00 LPA.
The previous 2023-25 report recorded ₹26.44 LPA average and ₹25 LPA median, with 141 recruiters and 75 PPO/PPI offers. This gives students useful context: the 2024-26 batch improved the average and median over the immediately previous reported batch.
Do not use ₹71.50 LPA as the expected salary. The median of ₹26 LPA is a much better indicator of the middle of the graduating cohort. Also inspect function and sector mix on the detailed placements page before choosing IIM Shillong for a particular career path.
