IIM Bangalore PGPBA: What the Programme Is Designed For

The IIM Bangalore Post Graduate Programme in Business Analytics (PGPBA) is a two-year, full-time residential MBA programme focused on using analytics and artificial intelligence to solve complex business problems. The programme runs for six trimesters and includes a summer project between the first and second year.

2 years Full-time residential MBA leading to an MBA in Business Analytics
6 trimesters Structured across core management and analytics-focused learning
Analytics + AI Second-year core includes Predictive and Generative AI and Big Data Analytics & NLP
Course-level decision point: PGPBA is not a narrowly technical data-science degree. The curriculum combines management subjects with quantitative, analytics and AI courses, so it is better suited to students who want to use analytics for business decisions and eventually move into analytical leadership or cross-functional management roles.

IIM Bangalore PGPBA Eligibility 2027-29

IIM Bangalore has published the eligibility rules for the PGPBA 2027-29 admission cycle. The academic route is deliberately broad: applicants do not need a specific undergraduate discipline, but they must satisfy the minimum academic requirement and have a valid CAT score.

Academic eligibility

Applicant route Eligibility requirement CAT requirement
Bachelor's degree Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. Valid CAT score on the date of application submission.
SC / ST / PwD applicants Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 45% marks or equivalent CGPA. Valid CAT score on the date of application submission.
Professional degree route Completed CA, CS, ICWA (CMA) or FIAI professional degree. IIMB's footnote specifically states that candidates without a bachelor's degree who completed CA/ICWA/CS after Class XII can also apply, subject to the stated minimum percentage/CGPA requirement. Valid CAT score on the date of application submission.

Does your undergraduate stream matter?

No specific bachelor's discipline is prescribed in the published eligibility criterion. However, students should distinguish eligibility from competitiveness: PGPBA's admission process also evaluates academic performance, CAT sectional performance and work experience, so simply meeting the minimum graduation percentage does not indicate a likely shortlist.

Can final-year students apply?

The 2027-29 admission document lists a bonafide certificate for candidates studying in the final year among the required documents. Such applicants should therefore ensure their university documentation can establish their current academic status and later completion of the qualifying degree.

IIM Bangalore PGPBA Admission Process 2027-29: Step-by-Step

The PGPBA admission process has two selection stages. The first stage creates a shortlist and a pre-PI score. Shortlisted candidates then participate in a Personal Interview and Written Ability Test, after which IIMB calculates a post-PI composite score for final offers.

Check eligibility and take CAT 2026 You must meet the academic/professional eligibility and have a CAT 2026 score valid on the application date. IIMB requires positive raw scores in all CAT sections for candidates to be considered for the first shortlist.
Submit the online PGPBA application The application is the starting point of the IIMB PGPBA admission process. The 2027-29 application window is scheduled from 1 October 2026 to 14 January 2027.
Complete the reference requirement Two online reference letters are mandatory. Referees should preferably be a current/past employer or a teacher from an academic institution where the candidate studied. The application cannot be submitted until the reference section is complete.
Clear the first-shortlist requirements IIMB first applies minimum CAT section requirements. Candidates in the first shortlist are then evaluated through the pre-PI scoring framework.
Reconfirm interest if shortlisted Before calling candidates for the PI, IIMB will write to first-shortlist candidates and ask them to reconfirm their interest in PGPBA 2027-29. Candidates who reconfirm are considered for the PI/WAT shortlist using the pre-PI score.
Attend PI and WAT The Personal Interview and Written Ability Test are held on the same day and at the same location. The WAT is approximately 30 minutes and is evaluated on the content and style of the note.
Final selection through post-PI score IIMB combines PI, WAT, CAT, academic scores and work-experience components to create the post-PI composite score. Final offers are made category-wise on this score.
Important for applicants:

IIMB explicitly states that the published process is applicable to the 2027-29 cycle only and may be changed for future cycles. Use the official admission document as the final authority when the application window opens.

IIM Bangalore PGPBA CAT Cutoff 2027-29

For PGPBA 2027-29, IIMB's admission document publishes the minimum percentile requirements for the first shortlist based on CAT 2025. These are not a guaranteed interview or admission score.

Category VARC DILR QA Overall
General 80 80 80 85
NC-OBC 70 70 70 75
EWS 70 70 70 75
SC 60 60 60 70
ST 55 55 55 65
PwD 50 50 50 60
Do not treat 85 percentile as a safe PGPBA target.

IIMB says these are cut-offs used for preparing the first shortlist and that the scores of candidates called for interviews may be higher. In addition, the shortlist uses a multi-factor pre-PI score.

Pre-PI selection weights for PGPBA 2027-29

Component Weight What students should understand
CAT 55 The largest component. CAT performance is evaluated across VARC, DILR and QA.
Class 10 score 10 Normalized academic score.
Class 12 score 10 Normalized academic score.
Bachelor's score 10 Normalized graduation score.
Work experience 10 Calculated using months of qualifying work experience; internships, apprenticeships/articleship and unpaid work are not counted.
Gender diversity 5 Used only for the pre-PI score and not in the next stage.

How work experience is scored

For the pre-PI score, IIMB gives points based on qualifying work experience, with the maximum weight available at the upper end of the qualifying experience range. Applicants should follow the exact cycle-specific calculation in the official 2027-29 admission document.

Special automatic PI qualification routes

Among first-shortlisted candidates, the top-ten candidates in each of the total CAT score, CAT DILR score and CAT QA score categories automatically qualify for the PI stage. IIMB then evaluates these candidates in the same way as other PI candidates.

How to read this data:

These placement percentages are reported for the combined PGP and PGPBA cohort, not PGPBA alone. They show the breadth of the shared IIMB placement ecosystem but should not be presented as PGPBA-only placement statistics.

What roles can PGPBA support?

The programme's curriculum is particularly relevant for students targeting analytics-led management, product and technology, consulting, business intelligence, marketing analytics, decision sciences and other roles where quantitative analysis is combined with business judgment. The programme is not positioned by IIMB as a single-function degree, so students should choose it based on the type of work they want to perform rather than the course title alone.

Who Should Choose IIM Bangalore PGPBA?

Strong fit if you want

  • An MBA degree with a stronger analytics and AI orientation than a general management MBA.
  • To combine management fundamentals with machine learning, predictive and generative AI, NLP, optimization and data analysis.
  • Analytics-domain summer internship exposure and the option to select analytics field electives.
  • Career flexibility across analytics-linked management, consulting, technology/product and other business functions.

Think carefully if you want

  • A purely technical data-science programme focused primarily on coding and statistical modelling.
  • A course where admission depends mainly on crossing a published CAT cutoff.
  • A programme with a guaranteed analytics-only job outcome. IIMB's placement ecosystem covers many management functions.
  • A low-intensity MBA. The curriculum combines quantitative courses, core management subjects, projects and a demanding selection process.
Student decision rule: Choose PGPBA when your long-term goal is at the intersection of business + analytics + AI. If your target is purely technical data science, compare PGPBA against specialised technical programmes before applying. If your target is broad management with analytics capability, PGPBA is structurally aligned with that goal.
