MBBS at AMU: Overview

The MBBS programme at AMU is offered through the Faculty of Medicine and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC). The 2026-27 Guide to Admissions lists a duration of 4½ years followed by one year of compulsory rotatory internship and an intake of 145 students.

Unlike programmes such as B.Tech and MBA that use AMU's own admission tests, MBBS selection is through NEET-UG for registered candidates. Selected candidates also have to undergo a medical fitness examination before completing admission formalities.

AMU MBBS Eligibility 2026

The 2026-27 admission guide requires the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination of AMU or an equivalent recognised examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Candidates must have obtained at least 50% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The minimum age is 17 years as on December 31 of the year of admission. Candidates must also satisfy the applicable NEET-UG eligibility and counselling requirements.

AMU MBBS Admission 2026 Through NEET-UG

MBBS selection at AMU is through NEET-UG among registered candidates. The AMU admission guide does not prescribe a separate AMU MBBS entrance test.

  1. Meet the 10+2 PCB and English eligibility requirements.
  2. Appear for NEET-UG and obtain a valid result/rank.
  3. Register for the applicable medical counselling process and indicate AMU/JNMC where eligible.
  4. Follow the AMU admission/verification instructions after allotment.

AMU MBBS Fees 2026-27

The 2026-27 AMU admission guide lists ₹55,900 as the fee payable at the time of admission for M.B.B.S. This should be read as the admission-time amount, not automatically as the total cost of the full MBBS programme.

Students should separately verify recurring university charges, hostel and mess expenses and any other applicable fees from the current AMU schedule.

Clinical Training & Medical Learning

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College is the clinical teaching environment associated with AMU's medical education. AMU's Department of Medicine states that its department was established in 1963 and that the annual intake of MBBS students increased from 50 to 150 historically; the current 2026-27 admission guide lists 145 seats.

The clinical environment is important for medical students because MBBS outcomes depend not only on classroom teaching but also on patient exposure, clinical rotations, internship quality, faculty, hospital infrastructure and postgraduate preparation.

AMU MBBS Cutoff 2026

There is no single safe cutoff number without specifying the NEET year, counselling route, category, quota and round. AMU's 145-seat intake should also not be interpreted as a guaranteed NEET closing rank.

For a useful cutoff comparison

Track the official counselling authority's AMU/JNMC seat matrix and closing-rank data for the relevant category and round. Previous-year ranks are only trend indicators.

Career Options After MBBS

Clinical practice

Graduates can pursue the professional pathway permitted after completing the degree and internship and meeting registration requirements.

PG medical education

Many graduates prepare for postgraduate medical entrance pathways such as NEET-PG or the applicable future national process.

Public health

Medical graduates can explore public-health, community medicine, programme-management and health-administration roles.

Research & academics

Higher studies, research and academic medicine are additional pathways depending on qualifications and career goals.

NEET-UG Strategy for AMU MBBS Aspirants

Since MBBS admission is based on NEET-UG, the AMU-specific preparation question is not a separate university entrance syllabus. The competitive challenge is the national medical entrance examination followed by the applicable counselling and allotment process.

Students should track the relevant seat matrix, category, quota and counselling round before interpreting a previous year's closing rank. The same score can have a different admission implication across different rounds or categories.

What to Evaluate Beyond the MBBS Seat Count

A medical college decision should consider clinical exposure, teaching departments, patient load, internship structure, laboratories, library access, student support and postgraduate opportunities. JNMC is the clinical teaching environment associated with AMU's medical education, and AMU's medical departments publish their own academic and training information.

FactorWhy it matters
Clinical exposureDetermines the breadth of cases and practical learning available during clinical years.
InternshipProvides supervised hands-on exposure across clinical departments and is compulsory after the academic programme.
PG ecosystemUseful for students planning postgraduate medical education and specialty careers.
Student supportHostels, health services, academic support and campus facilities influence the overall student experience.

MBBS Cost: What the Admission Fee Does and Does Not Tell You

The current admission guide lists ₹55,900 payable at admission for MBBS. Students should not interpret that single payment as the total five-and-a-half-year financial requirement. Hostel, mess, later university charges, books, equipment, travel and personal expenses should be budgeted separately.

What Can You Do After MBBS?

After completing the academic programme and compulsory internship and satisfying the applicable registration requirements, graduates can enter clinical practice, prepare for postgraduate medical education, explore public health or health administration, or pursue research and academic pathways.

The choice of medical college should therefore be aligned with the student's longer-term plan. Students aiming for postgraduate specialisation may give additional weight to clinical exposure, department strength and the academic environment for entrance preparation.
