One-Year MBA for Experienced Professionals — Eligibility, GMAT/GRE, Fees, Admission & Career Outcomes

Programme Overview

MBA-PGPX is IIM Ahmedabad's one-year, full-time residential MBA programme designed for experienced professionals who want to move towards larger management responsibilities, leadership roles or a career transition.

Unlike the two-year PGP, PGPX is built around the experience already brought by the cohort. IIMA describes its orientation as developing a general management perspective for management executives, with a strong focus on leadership, decision-making and preparing for top-management responsibilities.

The key distinction: PGPX is not simply a shorter version of the two-year MBA. The programme is deliberately designed for professionals who already have substantial post-graduation work experience and can contribute to, and learn from, a peer group of experienced managers.

Eligibility for MBA-PGPX 2027–28

Bachelor's Degree

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline is required, with a minimum of 15 years of formal education under the Indian education system.

Age Requirement

Candidates must be at least 25 years old as on March 31, 2027. There is no upper age limit.

Work Experience

At least four years of full-time work experience after completion of graduation is required as on March 31, 2027.

Academic marks: IIMA's current PGPX FAQ states that there is no minimum bachelor's-level marks requirement for eligibility. However, selected candidates are likely to have a consistently good academic record.

GMAT / GRE Requirement

A valid GMAT or GRE score is required for the PGPX 2027–28 application. IIMA accepts scores taken within the previous five years, subject to the programme's stated validity cut-off for each application round.

Test Accepted? Important condition
GMAT Yes Test-centre based score; GMAT Focus Edition scores are accepted.
GRE Yes Valid score within the applicable five-year window.
Online / take-home GMAT or GRE No IIMA specifies that only test-centre based GMAT/GRE scores are valid.
Do not use a generic CAT cutoff for PGPX. PGPX admission is based on GMAT/GRE and the programme's own selection process rather than the CAT percentile framework used for the flagship two-year PGP.

Admission & Selection Process

Stage 1 — Application & Shortlisting

Candidates submit their application with their GMAT/GRE score, academic history, employment history, achievements and other requested information. IIMA then shortlists candidates for the next stage.

Stage 2 — Essays

Shortlisted candidates are required to submit essays on specified topics within the stipulated period. These essays form part of the selection assessment.

Stage 3 — Personal Interview

Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by an IIMA faculty panel. The institute states that the panel evaluates factors including professional background, quality and progression of experience, academic preparedness, leadership potential, accomplishments, interpersonal skills and overall programme fit.

What this means for applicants: A high GMAT/GRE score alone does not make a PGPX application strong. The quality and progression of your professional experience and your leadership trajectory matter substantially in the selection process.

What is included?

The PGPX fee is generally packaged and includes tuition, books and course materials, accommodation and specified campus services such as library and computing facilities.

Additional costs

International Immersion Programme costs are excluded from the programme fee, as are related travel and stay expenses. Utilities such as electricity, telephone, laundry and sports/gym subscriptions are also additional according to IIMA.

Curriculum & Learning Experience

The programme is structured across six terms and combines management fundamentals with a dedicated focus on preparing participants for top-management responsibilities.

Building Blocks

The initial academic phase strengthens core management knowledge through subjects such as finance, marketing, operations, economics, data and organisational behaviour.

Preparing for Top Management

A dedicated part of the programme focuses on complex managerial problems, leadership, strategic thinking and change management.

International Immersion

The International Immersion Programme is a compulsory component designed around global exposure and unfamiliar economic and cultural environments.

Electives

Participants can use electives to align their learning with their current role, target industry and post-PGPX career goals.

Case Method

Case discussions are supplemented by lectures, seminars, games, role plays, industrial visits and group exercises.

Capstone

The programme culminates in a capstone experience intended to integrate learning and develop decision-making in complex, time-bound situations.

PGPX Batch Profile

The latest officially published cohort profile is useful for understanding the kind of peer group a PGPX applicant can expect.

Parameter 2026–27 Batch
Batch Size 160
Average Work Experience 7 years 6 months
Average Age 30 years 8 months
Male Students 114 (72%)
Female Students 46 (28%)
International Exposure 36.43% of students
Average GMAT 691 (19 students)
Average GMAT Focus 652 (108 students)
Average GRE 323 (33 students)

Professional Backgrounds

The 2026–27 cohort included professionals from BFSI, consulting, energy and utilities, IT, manufacturing, defence and security, e-commerce, FMCG, media and advertising, aerospace and aviation, healthcare, and transportation and logistics.

What the batch profile tells you: PGPX is built around experienced peers rather than fresh graduates. The classroom value therefore depends heavily on your ability to contribute professional perspectives and learn from people with different industry and leadership experiences.

Placements & Career Outcomes

PGPX career services are designed around the fact that participants already have several years of professional experience. IIMA says the placement process is aligned with the profiles and aspirations of individual batches and targets middle and senior management roles.

Typical Recruiter Sectors

Banking, consulting, energy, financial services, IT, manufacturing, logistics, automotive and diversified business groups are among the sectors identified by IIMA.

Career Support

Career workshops, speaker sessions and individual coaching are provided to help participants develop focused career strategies.

Placement Format

Because PGPX participants target more experienced roles, IIMA uses a wave-based placement process followed by rolling recruitment.

Placement reality: IIMA explicitly states that placements are not guaranteed or an entitlement. For PGPX, your pre-MBA career, target role, industry and experience level remain important when evaluating expected ROI.

Official placement data

IIMA publishes audited PGPX placement reports under the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS). The latest available report should be used for salary comparisons rather than relying on third-party placement claims.

Who Should Apply for MBA-PGPX?

Mid-Career Professionals

Best suited to professionals with 4+ years of post-graduation experience who now need broader management exposure.

Career Switchers

A strong option for professionals targeting a meaningful shift in function, industry or management responsibility.

Future Senior Managers

Particularly relevant if your next career step requires stronger strategy, leadership, finance, operations or general-management capabilities.

Who Should Think Twice Before Choosing PGPX?

  • Professionals with less than four years of post-graduation work experience, because they do not meet the basic eligibility requirement.
  • Candidates looking for a traditional two-year MBA experience with a longer internship and greater time for exploration.
  • Applicants expecting the IIMA brand alone to guarantee a career switch or salary jump.
  • Professionals whose current career trajectory is already strong and who cannot justify the opportunity cost of leaving work for a full-time one-year residential programme.
Realistic verdict: PGPX makes the most sense when you can clearly explain what you want to do after one year and why an intensive IIMA MBA is the right bridge from your current experience to that next role.
