What is IIM Ahmedabad MBA-FABM?

The Post Graduate Programme in Food and Agri-business Management (PGP-FABM) is a two-year, full-time residential MBA-level programme leading to a Master of Business Administration (Food and Agri-business Management) degree. IIMA describes it as a sector-specific management programme for food, agriculture, agribusiness, rural, developmental and allied sectors.

The important point for applicants is that FABM combines a general management foundation with sector-specific learning. It is therefore broader than a purely agricultural degree, but more sector-focused than the regular PGP.

Student terminology: “IIM Ahmedabad Agri MBA”, “IIM Ahmedabad FABM”, “IIM Ahmedabad Food & Agri Business MBA” and “PGP-FABM” generally refer to this programme. The official programme name is PGP-FABM.

Eligibility: Do You Need an Agriculture Degree?

No, an agriculture degree is not mandatory. IIMA's domestic FABM eligibility allows candidates from agriculture-related as well as non-agricultural disciplines, subject to the applicable academic conditions.

Agriculture / Related Background

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in agricultural sciences or an agriculture-related discipline with the prescribed minimum marks/equivalent CGPA.

Non-Agricultural Background

A recognised Bachelor's or Master's degree in a non-agricultural discipline can also be considered. IIMA requires a strong interest in agriculture, food, rural and allied sectors.

Final-Year Students

Final-year candidates can apply subject to IIMA's conditions for completing the degree and submitting the required documentation by the specified deadlines.

Important: Eligibility is not the same as selection. Meeting the academic requirement does not guarantee a CAT shortlist, AWT/PI call or final admission.

CAT 2026 Cutoff for MBA-FABM 2027–29

IIMA publishes minimum overall and sectional screening thresholds for FABM. The thresholds also vary by the programme's academic-category classification (AC) and reservation category.

Do not read the minimum cutoff as a guaranteed call. These are screening thresholds. Clearing them does not by itself guarantee an AWT/PI call or admission.

What does AC mean? IIMA uses an Academic Category classification for the FABM shortlisting process. The applicable classification should be checked in the admission policy for the relevant cycle rather than guessed from the degree title alone.

MBA-FABM Admission & Selection Process

Step 1: CAT 2026 and preliminary screening

Domestic applicants need a valid CAT 2026 score and must meet the applicable academic and programme requirements. IIMA then applies its published preliminary screening methodology.

Step 2: AWT and Personal Interview

Shortlisted candidates are called for the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI).

Final selection

ComponentWeightage
Analytical Writing Test10%
Personal Interview40%
Composite score50%

IIMA's interview assessment can consider factors such as interview performance, academic performance, exceptional achievements, extracurricular activities, relevant post-degree work experience and recognised awards/achievements. Therefore, FABM admission is not a CAT-percentile-only process.

MBA-FABM Curriculum: What Will You Study?

The programme starts with management fundamentals common to the broader IIMA management environment and then moves into food, agriculture and agribusiness-specific learning. IIMA describes the second year as a combination of sector-specific compulsory and elective courses.

Year 1: Management foundation

TermRepresentative subjectsStudent focus

Term IIIBusiness Research Methods, Corporate Finance, Marketing-III, Organizational Dynamics, Operations Management-III, Strategic Management, Applied Data Science for Food & Agribusiness ManagementIntegrated management and sector context.

Year 2: Food, agriculture and agribusiness depth

IIMA lists courses such as Agribusiness Entrepreneurship, Agricultural Finance, Strategic Food Marketing, Agri Business Strategy, Rural Marketing, Sales & Distribution Management for Agriculture, Managing Contract Farming, Agri-Food Markets and Pricing, Managing Agri-Food Trade, Food Supply Chain Management, Commodities Markets and AI, Agri-Food Business & Global Challenges. The exact elective basket can change by academic year.

How Is FABM Taught?

  • Case method: business concepts are applied to real managerial situations.
  • Group work: students work with peers from different educational and professional backgrounds.
  • Guest lectures and seminars: used to connect classroom concepts with industry practice.
  • Industrial visits and field exposure: particularly relevant to understanding sector value chains.
  • Rural Immersion: a mandatory academic component for FABM students.

The programme is designed around the realities of agribusiness such as seasonality, perishability, rural markets, policy, supply chains and uncertainty. That sector context is a major part of what differentiates FABM from a generalist MBA.

Rural Immersion & Summer Internship

Rural Immersion Module (RIM)

IIMA states that Rural Immersion is a mandatory academic requirement. Students spend time in a village environment to understand rural economic and social realities rather than studying the rural market only through classroom cases.

Summer internship

After the first year, students undertake an 8–9 week summer internship. IIMA lists exposure across FMCG, agricultural inputs, agri-banking, agri-consulting, renewable energy and food/agribusiness advisory, with functions such as strategy, marketing, commodity trading, sales and distribution, supply chain, procurement and research/advisory.

Internships can also lead to pre-placement offers when students meet the employer's requirements, but a PPO is not automatic.

International Exposure and Student Exchange

IIMA lists exchange collaborations involving institutions such as ESSEC, UBC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and NHH Norwegian School of Economics. The exchange opportunity and participating institutions can depend on the applicable academic year and selection/availability conditions.

This is different from saying that every FABM student automatically gets an international exchange. Students should check the current programme rules for eligibility, selection and costs.

When FABM May Not Match Your Career Goal

  • If you want a completely generalist MBA and do not want sector-specific food/agri-business coursework.
  • If you are choosing the programme only because of the IIMA brand but have no interest in its sector context.
  • If your intended career path is unrelated to the programme and you do not value rural, food or agribusiness exposure.
Student perspective: Treat FABM as a career-and-curriculum choice, not simply as another name for the regular PGP.
