What makes BHU different for students?
Banaras Hindu University was established in 1916 and its 2026 UG bulletin describes a university spread across more than 550 hectares, with 5 institutes, 16 faculties and 136 departments. Its academic range covers science, engineering and technology, medicine, agriculture, veterinary sciences, humanities, social sciences, commerce, law, education, performing arts and visual arts.
The university also runs the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus at Barkachha in Mirzapur, about 75 km from the main Varanasi campus. IIT (BHU) is situated on the BHU campus but has separate engineering admissions and placement reporting, so its figures should not be mixed with BHU university data.
BHU does not use one entrance exam for every course. For the 2026 UG cycle, the university required CUET-UG followed by BHU CAP-UG registration and allotment. Regular PG admissions use CUET-PG and BHU's PG counselling process, while some programmes add practical tests, GD-PI, physical tests or other selection components.
Which BHU courses are most relevant to applicants?
The 2026 UG bulletin lists four-year NEP programmes such as B.A. (Hons.), B.Com. (Hons.), B.Sc. (Hons.), BFA and BPA, along with programmes such as B.Sc. Agriculture, B.A. LL.B., medical technology and B.Tech in Food Technology and Dairy Technology. At PG level, BHU offers a much wider set of master's and professional programmes.
| Course area | Examples | Typical admission route | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arts & Social Sciences | B.A. (Hons.) Economics, Political Science, Psychology, English, History | CUET-UG + BHU CAP | Language + General Aptitude Test for the listed 2026 B.A. groups |
| Science | B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Zoology | CUET-UG + BHU CAP | PCM/PCB subject combination depends on the programme |
| Commerce | B.Com. (Hons.), B.Com. (Hons.) Financial Market Management | CUET-UG + BHU CAP | Accountancy/Book Keeping + Business Studies + General Aptitude Test |
| Law | B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) | CUET-UG + BHU CAP | English/Hindi + General Aptitude Test |
| Agriculture | B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture | CUET-UG + BHU CAP | Multiple permitted science/agriculture subject combinations |
| Management | MBA, MBA-IB and other management programmes | Programme-specific | Do not apply the CUET-UG rules to MBA |
| PG | M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., MCA and other master's programmes | CUET-PG + BHU CAP where applicable | Eligibility and selection can vary by programme |
For 2026, BHU also listed separate practical-test routes for BFA and BPA. Their final merit includes CUET performance plus the practical examination conducted by BHU.
| Course | Dedicated guide | Admission route |
|---|---|---|
| BA Hons | BHU BA Hons | CUET-UG + CAP-UG |
| BSc Hons | BHU BSc Hons | CUET-UG + CAP-UG |
| BCom Hons | BHU BCom Hons | CUET-UG + CAP-UG |
| BA LLB | BHU BA LLB | CUET-UG + CAP-UG |
| BSc Agriculture | BHU BSc Agriculture | CUET-UG + CAP-UG |
| BTech Dairy Technology | BHU BTech Dairy Technology | CUET-UG + CAP-UG |
| MBA | BHU MBA | CUET-PG / programme-specific |

What is the BHU eligibility criteria?
There is no single BHU percentage requirement. The exact qualifying subjects, minimum marks and age requirements are programme-specific.
For UG applicants
- You must appear in the required CUET-UG paper(s).
- You must satisfy the Class 12/qualifying-examination requirement for the chosen programme.
- Subject combinations matter. For example, B.A. groups use English/Hindi + General Aptitude Test, while B.Sc. groups can require PCM or PCB subjects.
- For practical-test programmes, CUET alone is not the complete selection process.
For PG applicants
- Eligibility depends on the specific master's programme.
- CUET-PG is the main route for regular PG admission covered by the 2026 process.
- Some PG programmes have GD-PI, practical, physical-fitness or other additional assessment.
- Category certificates must be valid and uploaded where reservation is claimed.
BHU's 2026 UG bulletin also states that final-year candidates can appear for CUET-UG, but they must meet the programme eligibility by the time of admission. A gap year does not by itself make a candidate ineligible.
How does BHU admission actually work?
The most important step students miss is that appearing for CUET is not the end of the BHU admission process. For the 2026 UG cycle, candidates had to appear for CUET-UG and then separately register through BHU's CAP-UG system for seat allocation.
UG admission flow
- Choose the BHU programme and verify its CUET subject combination.
- Appear for CUET-UG in the required subjects.
- Register on BHU CAP-UG after the university opens its admission portal.
- Submit programme preferences and required documents.
- Participate in BHU allotment rounds.
- Pay the admission fee within the notified deadline.
- Use upgrade/freeze options where offered and complete reporting/document verification.
PG admission flow
- Appear for the required CUET-PG paper.
- Register on BHU's PG CAP/counselling portal.
- Submit programme preferences and documents.
- Participate in allotment or additional selection rounds.
- Pay the prescribed fee after allotment and complete admission formalities.
The 2026 PG portal shows separate rounds for regular allotment, GD-PI programmes and spot/mop-up processes. This is why students should check the programme-specific notice instead of assuming that every PG course follows the same timeline.
How much CUET score is needed for BHU? Check the actual cutoff numbers
BHU publishes programme-level allotment cutoffs rather than one university-wide “BHU cutoff”. The official 2025 Round 1 UG allotment PDF reports the actual cutoff score against the programme, college/faculty and category. The figures below are useful reference points from the official Round 1 data.
| Programme / location | Category | 2025 Round 1 cutoff score |
|---|---|---|
| B.Com. (Hons.) — Faculty of Commerce | General | 548.985 |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics with Computer Science — Faculty of Science | General | 516.371 |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics with Physics — Faculty of Science | General | 502.357 |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics with Computer Science — Faculty of Science | General | 478.971 |
| B.A. (Hons.) Political Science with Geography — Faculty of Social Sciences | General | 370.750 |
| B.A. (Hons.) Political Science with History — Faculty of Social Sciences | General | 373.835 |
| B.A. (Hons.) English — Faculty of Arts | General | 315.342 |
These are 2025 Round 1 closing/allotment scores, not 2027 predictions. They also cannot be converted into a universal percentage because BHU uses programme-specific CUET score combinations and different courses have different maximum-score structures.
Why can two BHU courses have very different cutoffs?
- Programme demand differs.
- Seat availability differs by faculty/college.
- Category changes the applicable cutoff.
- Paid-fee courses can have different cutoffs from regular seats.
- Later rounds can move lower or higher depending on upgrades and vacant seats.
Compare your CUET score with the latest cutoff for the exact programme, category and BHU location/college. Do not compare a B.Com score directly with an MBA, MCA or another programme's cutoff.
What does BHU actually charge for courses?
BHU does not have one university-wide course fee. The 2026 UG bulletin lists programmes and their academic structures, while programme-specific admission documents and fee notices determine the amount payable. The same university can therefore have very different fee obligations across Arts, Science, professional and paid-fee programmes.
| Fee factor | What students need to check |
|---|---|
| Regular UG programme | Programme-specific fee notified through the applicable admission/fee schedule. |
| Paid-fee seat | Separate fee structure can apply; the 2025 cutoff data itself lists paid-fee courses separately. |
| PG programme | Semester fee differs by programme and faculty. |
| Hostel | Accommodation and related charges are separate from academic fee where applicable. |
For this overview, I am deliberately not inserting one “BHU average fee” because that would hide the programme-level difference. Exact fee tables should be added when each dedicated course page is created.
What are BHU placements like? Latest official numbers
BHU placement performance has to be read by programme duration because the university's official NIRF placement data reports different undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts. The university's 2025 public-disclosure material reports 626 UG students and 1,341 PG students placed.
| Programme duration / level | Students placed | Median salary |
|---|---|---|
| UG 3-year | Official NIRF 2025 placed count included in 626 UG placements | ₹8 LPA |
| UG 4-year | Official NIRF 2025 placed count included in 626 UG placements | ₹9 LPA |
| UG 5-year | Official NIRF 2025 placed count included in 626 UG placements | ₹16 LPA |
| PG 2-year | 1,341 | ₹9 LPA |
The figures above are median salaries, not average or highest packages. This matters because a median is the middle value of the reported salary distribution and is more useful for judging the typical outcome than a headline highest package.
What does the university's Annual Report add?
BHU's 2024-25 Annual Report also contains unit-level placement evidence. One postgraduate cohort reported 156 students appearing for campus recruitment, of whom 151 were placed; packages ranged from ₹6 LPA to ₹19.8 LPA, with 57 organisations participating. Recruiters listed in that report included Infosys, Wipro, EY, ICICI Bank, Federal Bank, SBI Life, Adani Wilmar, VECV and DCM Shriram.
This is useful evidence of recruiter activity, but it is not a university-wide MBA/BHU average package. It should be read as the placement outcome of the specific unit reported in the Annual Report.
Where is BHU and what is the campus structure?
BHU's main campus is in Varanasi. The 2026 UG bulletin describes the main campus as more than 550 hectares and lists 5 institutes, 16 faculties and 136 departments. The university also has the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus at Barkachha, Mirzapur, spread over about 1,092.6 hectares and located roughly 75 km from the main campus.
The admission portal also lists colleges admitted to BHU's privileges, including Arya Mahila Post Graduate College, D.A.V. Post Graduate College, Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya and Vasanta College for Women. Therefore, the cutoff table should always be read with the faculty/college name attached to the score.
IIT (BHU) is situated on the BHU campus but has separate engineering admissions and placement reporting. A placement figure from IIT (BHU) should not be presented as the placement figure of Banaras Hindu University as a whole.
BHU admission FAQs students actually ask
Is CUET enough to get admission to BHU?
No. For UG, students need the required CUET-UG score, must satisfy programme-specific eligibility and must also complete BHU CAP registration and seat-allotment formalities. BHU's 2026 FAQ explicitly says appearing in CUET does not guarantee admission.
What CUET score is good for BHU?
There is no single safe score. Official 2025 Round 1 cutoffs show why: B.Com (Hons.) at the Faculty of Commerce had a General cutoff of 548.985, while B.A. English at the Faculty of Arts had 315.342 in the cited Round 1 data. Your target should therefore be based on the exact course and category.
Does BHU use CUET percentile or score for UG admission?
BHU's 2026 UG bulletin states that admission is determined by CUET-UG scores, with programme-specific subject requirements. The official 2025 allotment documents report cutoff scores such as 548.985 and 370.750 rather than a single university-wide percentile cutoff.
Can I get BHU without registering on the BHU portal after CUET?
No for the standard UG route. After appearing in CUET-UG, eligible candidates must register through BHU's CAP-UG process for seat allocation.
Are BHU 2027 admission dates announced?
No. The current official sources provide the 2026-27 admission cycle. The 2026 dates should be treated as planning references only until BHU publishes the 2027 bulletin.
Is there one BHU cutoff for all courses?
No. Cutoffs vary by programme, faculty/college, category, quota and admission round. BHU publishes programme-level allotment cutoffs.
Is IIT BHU the same as BHU?
No. IIT (BHU) Varanasi is a separate institute within the BHU campus ecosystem and has its own admission and placement information.
